How a Southern California dental group expanded to four locations by treating every new patient as a local-search problem — and solving it systematically.

The situation (2004)

Clinically excellent. Marketing invisible.

Advanced Dental Arts Group was a single-location dental practice in Southern California when I was brought on as marketing consultant. The practice was clinically excellent but struggling with new patient acquisition. Most of their marketing budget was going to print ads, local sponsorships, and the occasional Yellow Pages listing — the stuff that felt like marketing but was producing almost nothing measurable.

The real problem: when a prospective patient in their ZIP code searched for "dentist near me" or "family dental in [neighborhood]," the practice did not show up. Their website existed but was invisible. And because they could not track what was working, they could not stop what was not.

The work — Website Optimizer applied to local healthcare

HIPAA, patient psychology, insurance complexity.

Dental marketing has rules general marketers miss — HIPAA, patient psychology, insurance complexity, trust calculus. I built the system with those constraints baked in.

01 · FoundationLocal SEO as the foundation.

Google Business Profile optimized and maintained weekly — photos, Q&A, posts, review responses. The practice went from page 3 to consistent top-3 for every major local search within nine months.

02 · Location pagesGenuinely local landing pages.

When the first new location opened, we did not use a template — we built a page that felt genuinely local. Staff photos at that specific office. Reviews from patients in that community. Local landmarks named in the copy. Google rewarded it.

03 · Patient journeyMapped touch points, killed drop-offs.

We tracked what actually happened between "someone searches for a dentist" and "someone sits in the chair for their first cleaning." Seven touch points, four drop-off points. Fixed the top two drop-offs: the phone call (staff training + call tracking) and the new-patient form (cut from four pages to one).

04 · ReviewsDone right, post-visit.

A post-visit sequence that asked satisfied patients for a review the day after a positive outcome. Review volume tripled in the first year.

05 · CultureTesting as culture.

Headlines, CTAs, hero images, scheduler flow — all tested. The tests that worked got deployed across all four locations once they opened.

The result

Dr. Gendreau's practice did not just grow. It built a marketing operation that could support more growth.

By the time they opened the fourth location, the playbook was documented, the systems were running, and the marketing engine scaled with them.

"Ben Blair completely revolutionized how we approach patient acquisition. From day one, he understood the unique challenges of marketing dental services — building trust with potential patients while communicating complex treatments in an accessible way."

"Ben does not just create pretty campaigns; he builds comprehensive patient journey maps that turn prospects into long-term patients. The ROI on his recommendations has been outstanding."

"If you are a healthcare practice looking to grow effectively, Ben Blair is your answer."
